Mindful Monday #15: Depression and the Holidays

Updated: Oct 13, 2020

Depression is an awful feeling that is something that can hit any of us at any time. I believe it is one of the worse feelings in the world. However, when I've been depressed, as well I know with other Fibromyalgia and chronic pain sufferers, I feel it can be worse for us personally. Please let me explain my reasoning for this. When you are depressed, you feel very low and are in a dark; possibly suicidal place. Here is a blog that I wrote a year ago. I decided to update it for a Mindful Monday as the holidays are creeping up on us, depression is a real thing. Please do not ever dismiss your feelings! I would encourage everyone to read this article I found on the 9 Types of Depression and How to Recognize Them.

I still get extremely depressed from my pain levels. It's very frustrating, but it is comforting that I am not alone. I know many purple butterflies go through the same thing on a daily basis. My mind wants to have a good time, alas my body won't have any part of it. When the holidays roll around, it reminds me that my mother and grandmother aren't physically here anymore. Due to this, there are a few times that my depression worsens. As the year’s past, it has been a little easier. They both loved the holidays tremendously. My grandmother would host Turkey Day, and then for Christmas my mother would be the hostess.

Here are some things that my family and I have been doing to keep my mom and grandma’s memory alive during the holidays:

· We have some of the foods my mother and grandma loved at mealtime.

· I pick out the pretty things they would’ve decorated with.

· We select their favorite carols for a playlist.

· We use the china I inherited for meals.

· I’ve adopted an animal from the local zoo for a Christmas present.

· We’ve driven around town looking at the holiday decorations.

· We will host the occasional a holiday party.

I am very fortunate to have an awesome support system. Do you have anyone you can talk to if you need to? How do you handle your depression? What do you do? Do you have any special plans for this year? Remember, don’t hesitate to leave a comment below! I love reading your comments!

As always, I pray everyone is staying safe!

Till next week! Be well!

~ Rachel
